Background of the Study

Exclusive breastfeeding is essential for newborn health, providing the necessary nutrients and antibodies to support growth and immune function. Nurses, as primary caregivers, are in a pivotal position to educate mothers about the importance and methods of exclusive breastfeeding. However, in Sokoto State, where cultural beliefs and socioeconomic factors can influence breastfeeding practices, the role of nurses in promoting exclusive breastfeeding is not well documented.

This study aims to assess the role of nurses in educating mothers about exclusive breastfeeding in Sokoto State, exploring the challenges they face and the strategies they use to promote this practice.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the well-established benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, many mothers in Sokoto State do not fully engage in this practice. This could be due to lack of education, cultural influences, or inadequate support. This study will explore the role of nurses in promoting exclusive breastfeeding and identify barriers to effective education.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of nurses in educating mothers about exclusive breastfeeding in Sokoto State.

  2. To identify the challenges nurses face in promoting exclusive breastfeeding.

  3. To explore the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in increasing the rate of exclusive breastfeeding.

Research Questions

  1. What role do nurses play in educating mothers about exclusive breastfeeding in Sokoto State?

  2. What challenges do nurses face in promoting exclusive breastfeeding in Sokoto State?

  3. How effective are nurse-led interventions in increasing exclusive breastfeeding rates in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Sokoto State effectively educate mothers on exclusive breastfeeding practices.

  2. Cultural beliefs and lack of resources significantly hinder nurses' ability to promote exclusive breastfeeding in Sokoto State.

  3. Nurse-led interventions significantly increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in Sokoto State.
